Arrangements of arranged marriage III: Why (Indian) Women keep more fasts than men?

This all started when my friend (addressed here as b2) asked me (addressed here as Jaz) a question which was slightly angled towards gender bias. The answer that I gave her forms the theme of this blog.

B2: Saawan ka month jaz ...r u fasting?
Jaz: I don’t fast ever b2….
B2: Obviously, why will you fast, in the Indian tradition…only girls fast, (though) I never get the logic.
Jaz: It’s a very simple logic…girls have way higher demand than men…so they have to fast more.

So for my international readers, ‘Saawan’ is the month of monsoon rains in India. This month is traditionally dedicated to the worship of lord Shiva- the God of destruction. It is believed that if a girl fasts all the Mondays in this month and worships lord Shiva, she would get the groom of her choice. Similarly there are fasts for Tuesdays dedicated lord Hanuman, the God of strength. On Thursdays it is dedicated to lord Vrahaspati (Indian version of Jupiter planet). On Friday for Santoshi Mata, the goddess of power and she is deemed to fulfill all the wishes. On Saturday for lord Shani (or Indian version of planet Saturn), who seems to bring you a very bad luck if he is unhappy and a very good luck if he is happy with you. (I am not kidding, one of my ex room- mate believes that his recent attack of shingles was due to Lord Shani and he pleases lord Shani by having Jack Daniel’s every Saturday night). Sunday fasts are for the Sun God (wasn’t hard to guess, I know).
All of these fasts are mostly tailor-made for women. They hand pick one of the days of the week (some brave ones more than one) in some part of their lives and try to please that specific God. As the tale goes, Goddess Parvati won lord Shiva by keeping the Monday fasts; ladies today try to repeat the fact (not sure if they finally get Shiva). Apart from the fasts mentioned above I have seen the ladies going in for two more fasts: Karvachauth, which is for the long life of the husband (these days even fiancées and boyfriends) and Sakat, which is for the long life of the son.
Now, why are only women being pestered? Why do they need to keep all the fasts while men don’t? Well the answer is really very simple. The fact is the ladies demands are way higher than men’s. They need to go for the Monday fasts for getting a groom of their dreams; one who is handsome, smart, earns well, has a stable future (I don’t need to read the list- you already know it). For men, 2 pegs down, any woman is The woman of his dreams. For women once they get married, they generally don’t want their husbands to die (its not only about the money, but who wants to go through the trouble of more Mondays to find a new groom?). Hence, The ‘karvachauth’. Men do not need to fast on karvachauth, because once married, they pray every day for their women to leave them (here the demands are quite contrary to what can be fulfilled by keeping fasts).
A fact that most of the girls are forced by their moms to go through the fasting process shows that men are somehow disconnected and disassociated with this fasting process. Is there a data to support this fasting process? Like, did anyone (with the exception of Parvati) get the groom of her dreams?  The answer is who cares for that when so many people are getting fooled without looking at the data?
For us, we men look at the data actually. So we see people working out at the gym and building muscles, which leads often to the creation of huge impression on girls. Hence we take steroids, protein and work out daily at the gym. Often impress girls.
Conclusion: Statistical approach and result oriented exercises lead to finding better matches than blind faith.

  1. Ya, people who actually believe in astrology and many other superstitions, are also victims of such blind faith. How can a planet so far away in the solar system possibly ruin my personal life (:-p). The only effect I can think of is due to the Newton's Law of Gravitation. Out of the superstitions, 1% or 2% of things may happen due to generic randomness in nature. Those people go around spreading these superstitions. The remaining people become too shameful due to their ignorance that they don't even talk about it. Ya of course, some of them never learnt even after repeated mistakes (:-&).. These are all trivial human psychological scenarios... Humans always like to blame their misfortunes on something.

  2. @harish. Glad that you mentioned gravity, before newton discovered gravity, it was a random force pulling us down. I agree spreading rumors is bad however taking such rigid stand will not help our creativity. For example if nothing else it acts as placebo effect strengthening the resolve of certain people and i do not think we have the right to infringe on their freedom to choose something that is yet unproven or wrong entirely.

@Srivats, jaz how come you jumped from girls fast to superstitions??. It was getting grimmer & better with girls & fast when all of a sudden you made it superstition vs statistical approach.

    1. First of all you must go into the subtlety of the argument Avdhesh, I also try to bring out the vanity in ourselves.
If you go to the start ...I was just trying to answer..albeit in a funny way...is this is a gender bias? And if yes, is this self-inflicted or forced ? And if so, what does one get out of that ?
Now scientists identify superstition as....something which is unproven ...but is followed by the masses....assuming it would do something great for them..Now...you accept that this jugaad of fasts is unproven...and for that matter according to your argument...all the practices of modern day religiousness can be taken as placebos and placebos only...
Statistical arguments were put here on the basis of personally collected data and you have a right to refute if you have data leading to different conclusion

    2. first of all soory for not replying earlier.
Secondly. You are talking about statistics, correct me if i am wrong but are you actually talking about of getting groom by monday fasts, my first question is "where did you get your statistics?", secondly monday fasts are also a way to test your commitment to a relationship so are karvachauth & sakat.

And do tell me statistics between divorce rate of people who marry for gym trained body as compared to those who get a husband after 16 monday fasts.

    3. First of all try to differentiate between sarcasm and reality, of course I have no data to support or deny any of the hypotheses that you mentioned. The last paragraph was meant to find an activity similar to fasting that Indian males would do to find a good match! This helped me in mocking ourselves (male species).
Although, its a known fact that a better physique in men attracts more women than it repels. Laws of attraction! Also, reality is we all get attracted towards beautiful ladies, whether or not the person keeps fasts :)
Last but not the least neither 16 Monday fasts, nor 100 push-ups a day would find you a good match. Being a good person would :P

  5. Its being scientificaly analysed that fasts one or twice a week helps in fighting against several brain diseases and all. Those who are keen on taking our vedas, it is simply beyond ur approach.Ancient scientists of vedic era presented such complex things in a manner it gets widely accepted and may be they personified it so it remains through centuries.
When u talk of men and women,it may be that as they are more fragile by nature and have to give birth thats why they may be protected using all this.
Its human greed that exploits nt the religion, mind it.

    1. Hey Akki, thanks for your reply. See I can't challenge Vedas, I haven't read them. But I can go on proofs and obvious facts.
When you say fasts once or twice a week helping in better health, you need to show me a proof. Our let me start with a proof here. Read this post on CNN, which was aired on Fareed Zakaria's show. (http://globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com/2013/07/17/u-s-no-longer-heaviest-of-heavyweights/). Fasting during Ramadan months has lead to greater Obesity in Qatar.
Instead of fasting, doctors do recommend a proper balanced diet. Because like in Ramadan or Karvachauth, fasting without drinking water might have ill-effects in the body. Your body cells require water and certain amount of food in given intervals of time for functioning properly. Not having any water for near 12-15 hours in a day is both unscientific and stupid.
So next time you should support your arguments with real research results. :)

  6. I guess there is some statistical data that shows generally speaking women get married a little bit earlier than men around the world.

  8. Fasting And Alzheimer’s
There seem to be some mysterious
benefits for the brain in Ramadan-
style fasting. A study conducted at
    the National Institute on Aging
    showed that intermittent
deprivation of food can protect the
    brain from diseases like
    Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
    [Mark] Mattson and his colleagues
also shared data from research on
    humans, which shows that
    populations with higher caloric
    intakes—such as the United States
    and Europe—have a greater
    prevalence of Alzheimer’s than do
    populations that eat less—such as
    China and Japan. (From Andrea
    Useen’s article Why Religious
Fasting Could Be Good for Your
    Brain .)
    Go through this one too-

    http://indianknowledgesystemacademy.blogspot.com/2010/02/science-and-importance-of-fasting.html?m=1

According to me "Fasting is a type of meditation so if do it wrong way things can get worse."

  9. Well...the use of word mysterious suggests that they are still guessing that it might be the reason...not necessarily true..I still don't buy the argument that starving the body for around 12 -16 hrs without food or water is a good idea
